Want to work in engineering or technology? A world-leading broadcaster like the BBC could be a great place to begin your career, with opportunities on offer in broadcast and software engineering as well as research and development.

Digital Bristol Week returns to Bristol from 2 to 8 February 2015 with an exciting schedule packed with a great selection of free events to develop your career and contacts.
Digital Bristol Week is being produced by the BBC in partnership with the University of the West of EnglandCreative SkillsetBristol MediaBristol City Council, the University of BristolCreative England and the Pervasive Media Studio.

This hugely successful collaboration - which on its debut in 2013 reached some 500 industry professionals - is back for a second event… And this time it’s even better. 
Building on Bristol’s reputation as a centre of excellence for digital media, the BBC Bristol partnership will be offering a free programme of events to help YOU understand the opportunities that digital brings.
Held across the city there’ll be stimulating discussions on the future of digital technology, hands-on workshops and training with leading professionals, and new elements involving hacking and making.
Don’t miss it - come and explore the future for Bristol’s creative industries and develop your skills. 

Helping BAME professionals get back into TV



BAME Proffessionals



Bookings are now open for Welcome Back - a brand new free event for BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) professionals on 5 November at BBC New Broadcasting House in London.
Delivered by the BBC Academy in partnership with The TV Collective and Creative Skillset, the event is open to 50 BAME professionals seeking to return to the television industry.
The last Creative Skillset census found that BAME representation in the creative industries has seen "a decline from 12,250 in 2009 to 10,300 in 2012. BAME people represented 7.4% of the total workforce in 2006, compared to 6.7% in 2009 and 5.4% in 2012".
A packed day will offer informative and insightful panel sessions, hands-on training and exclusive one to one networking opportunities
With this statistic in mind,Welcome Back aims to encourage, equip and empower BAME professionals to re-enter the TV industry with renewed confidence and up to date knowledge. The event will also provide a chance to network with industry execs and to gain practical help, inspiration and advice.
A packed day will offer a series of informative and insightful panel sessions, hands-on training and exclusive one to one networking opportunities with industry talent managers and series/exec producers. Danny Cohen, BBC director of Television will open the day and sessions will give access to senior figures from broadcasters and indies talking on a variety of subjects, such as career strategy, the commissioning process and the business of television.
By the end of the day, delegates will have the contacts, confidence and information to help them step back into television. 
This day is a Creative Skillset funded initiative and is supported by the TV Skills Fund.

The programme: what to expect

9:00 Opening Address - Danny Cohen, BBC director of Television.
9:30-10:30 Keynote speech from presenter June Sarpong. 
10:40-11:40 Opportunity Knocks - a practical panel session looking at where job opportunities lie and how to approach getting back into the industry. The panel is Sandy Smith, executive editor, The One Show, David Flynn, chief creative officer, Endemol, Michelle Matherson, talent executive. Shiver/ITV and Priscilla Baffour, industry talent specialist, Channel 4.
11:50-12:50 Meet the Commissioners - including Celia Taylor, head of Non-Scripted, Entertainment at Sky and Sam Bickley, acting channel editor, BBC Three.
12:50-13:30 Lunch will be provided.
13:30-14:30 Understanding the Deal: The Business of TV - a panel session on how to be business-savvy featuring Tamara Howe, controller of Business, Comedy and Entertainment, BBC and Sanjay Singhal, chief executive, Voltage TV.
14:40-15:40 Hands-on training sessions, including: how to develop ideas, how to network and sell yourself and digital storytelling.
15:50-16:50 Stay Tuned: This is the Future - a panel session which will de-mystify the world of digital media. Featuring Pat Younge, founder and director WeCreate Associates and Jamal Edwards, founder and CEO, SB:TV.
17:10-17:50 Keynote - Adil Ray, broadcaster, actor and creator, writer and star of Citizen Khan.
17:50-18:30 Networking drinks
Alongside this programme there will be pre-bookable career clinic appointments with industry talent managers and networking one-to-ones with series and exec producers.

Application Checklist

To attend Welcome Back you must fulfill both of the following criteria:
  • Be a professional from a BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic) background with a minimum of three years’ experience in ANY area of television or a minimum of three paid broadcast credits.
  • You must have been absent from the television industry for a minimum of one year - this means you have not been working in the TV industry in any capacity over the last twelve months.

Get your next job in TV Drama: Birmingham



Are you a TV freelancer with a passion for drama?
The BBC Academy and Creative Skillset are running a free training day on 20 October 2014 to help TV drama production freelancers take the next step in their career.
The event will take place in Birmingham – home to BBC dramas like Doctors, Land Girls and Father Brown [pictured] – and is aimed at freelancers who have either a minimum of six months production experience in any genre, one TV production credit or a high quality online portfolio.
Attendees can find out what skills the drama industry is looking for, be inspired by some of the genre’s leading talents, get hands on in practical training sessions and meet hiring managers from the BBC and indies.
Screenwriter, film director and creator of BBC Two drama Peaky Blinders Steven Knight will deliver the keynote at the end of the day, discussing the challenges and opportunities of working in the Midlands. There will also be job hunting advice focusing on everything from networking to CV writing.
This day is a Creative Skillset funded initiative for TV freelancers in the UK creative industries, and is supported by the Skills Investment Fund.
There will also be an event taking place in MediaCityUK, Salford on 21 November - booking for this will open nearer the time.

Apply for Expert Voices: BAME Talent Days




Do you want to share your expertise and knowledge by appearing on television and radio? Are you from a black, Asian or minority ethnic background?
The BBC Academy is holding a series of free introductions to the world of broadcasting to help BAME men and women feel comfortable appearing on television, radio and online as expert contributors or presenters. 
These events will help boost the diversity of experts in the media and follow the acclaimed Expert Women campaign which ran in 2013.
The days will offer a range of practical media experiences, including sessions on camera and in a radio studio as well as masterclasses and networking with experienced programme makers and industry leaders.

What we are looking for

We’re looking for recognised experts. What do we mean by expert? An expert could have:
  • Industry recognised expertise or the recognition of others in their field
  • A recognised qualification
  • Considerable experience in their field of work
  • Published academic papers or books
If you’re an expert and can talk about your particular field knowledgably, with enthusiasm, authority and passion – then we are looking for you.

Subject areas: Birmingham

We’re looking for people who are experts in the subject areas below and who live or work close to Birmingham. If you don’t live nearby or have expertise in a different area, take a look at our future sessions which are taking place around the UK.
Health and Medicine – are you medically qualified, are you a medical practitioner?
Rural Affairs – do you have specialist knowledge of farming and food production?
Science – do you have expertise in a subject – from forensics to biology – recognised in the academic, research or commercial world?
Business and Economics – can you demystify the world of business, from global finance to kitchen table start-ups?
Consumer Finance – can you talk knowledgeably about everything from mortgages to pay day lenders?
Community Matters – is your expertise in social policy, local education, housing or family and religious affairs?

How to apply

You will need to send us your CV and a short film of no more than two minutes duration. The film should be very straightforward – and can be as simple as a friend recording you on a smartphone.
The film should consist of you talking to camera:
a)     Give your name and job title at the start, explain your job in layman’s terms and talk briefly about what you do.
b)     Relate a story, within your area of expertise, that you want to tell and think the general public would find interesting.
The film should be uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo or similar so that we can view it.

Making your short film1. We are looking for people who can really bring their subject to life in a way that would appeal to a broad audience.
2. Keep a mainstream audience in mind and avoid complicated terminology.
3. Convey your enthusiasm and passion for your subject.
4. Don’t worry about producing a super slick film; smartphone quality is ideal. Just keep it simple - we aren’t evaluating your camera skills. The most important thing is that we can see and hear you clearly.

Closing date The closing date for applications is 11.59pm on Sunday 19 October 2014.

So we can see your filmA straightforward way to get your clip to us is to set up a YouTube account, and upload your short film there. You will need a Gmail email account in order to set up a YouTube account. (Please note that YouTube and Gmail are separate third parties that are not affiliated to the BBC.  You will therefore be subject to their third party terms and conditions.) 
Once you have set your YouTube account up, please check your settings. You must change your YouTube default setting from private to ‘unlisted’. 
The privacy settings on your entry videos must be set as ‘unlisted’ in order for us to view your films.
Please could you name your clip in the following format:

If you choose not to upload your film to YouTube you will need to burn it onto a CD or DVD and post it to Expert Voices, BBC Academy, College of Production, BC2C1, Broadcast Centre, 201 Wood Lane, London W12 7TP. Your parcel will need to arrive at the BBC by the closing date. We will not be able to return any CDs or other materials to you.

How we will choose the delegates for this eventA panel of experts from the BBC Academy and the wider BBC will view all the material submitted and will select up to 30 delegates, plus up-to five for a waiting-list, based on the following criteria:

  • USP as an expert in your field
  • Your potential as on screen/on mic talent
  • Relevance and audience awareness
The judges’ decision will be final and we will not be able to give you individual feedback or enter into any correspondence. We will take up references before confirming the final delegates and the people on the waiting list.
